Vladimir Pavlovich Shkurkin
          (1900 - 1990)

Born in Northern China to Pavel Vasilovich Shkurkin head of  a military family, Vladimir studied art in Kiev. After completing his formal education, he worked as a scenic artist in theatres, and taught painting and composition in a military college where he furthered his education. He came to the United States in 1925, and lived in Seattle from 1925 to 1938.


 

 

 

 


In Seattle, his art included landscapes, icons in Russian Orthodox churches (there are four that can be seen at St. Spiridon's in downtown Seattle today), and murals (see the Bacchus Greek restaurant on Roy Street, near Broadway on Capitol Hill). He married his wife, Irene (Lapiken) ,in Seattle. They he had  two sons (Vladimir V. and George V.) who were both born there. In 1938, he was invited to do two murals at the World Fair at Treasure Island in San Fransisco. He secured a job with the Navy at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California, as an artist/Illustrator through WWII until his retirement in 1963. His work there included War Bonds billboards, and illustrations of and on each submarine built at Mare Island.

After his retirement, V.P, continued painting, exhibiting and giving lessons from his studio at his home in Vallejo, California.   He and Irene were married for 62 years at the time of his death in 1990.
